Baja California Sur:  Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas is probably one of my favorite places for a vacation especially in the winter because in January the weather is virtually the same every time I’ve been there. It’s sunny and warm with a blue sky and hardly any clouds. The climate is arid and dry which is such a healthy departure from the damp, cold and gray Chicago weather I’ve left behind. It’s mostly rest and relaxation with a few excursions to the surrounding area. On a dinner boat cruise we passed by the famous Cabo Arch known as ‘El Arco’. It was dusk which really added some drama to my picture. It was also a perfect time of the day to capture the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. I was amazed at how active the wildlife was at dusk. Flocks of birds flew overhead and the seals were everywhere. It was almost as if they were showing off and putting on a performance for us. Or maybe that’s just what they do at dusk.

My friends and I rented a home in the Pedregal development which is just outside of the town area. The neighborhood is built on the hillside overlooking the Pacific so many of the homes have a fantastic view of the private beach and ocean. During our daily hikes I always had my camera with me and there was always a view with a photographic opportunity. One day we walked to the town for lunch and hopped on a boat taxi to visit other local spots on the Shoreline of the Sea of Cortez. The pelicans and the seals were always close by and it felt as if they knew just how to pose for my pictures. I have to say visiting Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful way to take a break from the long, freezing cold winters of Chicago and the Midwest.
